London, July 19 (ANI): U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy has split from his girlfriend Holly Sweeney, and looked a shadow of the player that he is during the British Open Championship.
His disappointment and frustration were tangible afterwards in what some saw as a petulant response to his defeat. McIlroy said he did not see any need to adapt his game to suit the conditions at Royal St George's. McIlroy said he would prefer to take his chances and wait until the sun shone.
His management company, ISM, issued a statement on Monday night, which might explain his offhand remarks. "Rory McIlroy's long-time relationship with Holly Sweeney came to an amicable end before the Open Championship," it said.
The pair had a period apart earlier in the year, but 20-year-old student Sweeney, a cheerleader for the Ulster rugby team, and McIlroy regrouped before the Masters. After his traumatic final day at Augusta, where he shot an 80, she flew out to console him, but she chose not to attend last month's US Open, where he claimed his first major title by eight shots.
