Nangal (Punjab), July 17 (ANI): Police on Sunday beefed up security at India's biggest multipurpose dam - Bhakra Dam - located on the Himachal Pradesh-Punjab border, after the Intelligence Bureau (IB) claimed that the dam was on the hit list of various militant outfits.
As per media reports, the IB has sent alerts to various security agencies in Himachal Pradesh and Punjab, claiming that the Bhakra Dam, built on the River Sutlej, is on the hit list of Pakistan-based militant outfits such as the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and the Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD).
Armed police officials were seen checking the all private and public vehicles thoroughly before letting them pass through check posts.
"We got a security alert notice and we have alerted our forces. We have increased the patrolling and are checking all buses commuting on the route. We are cautiously checking the surrounding areas also," said Karnail Singh Rakkar, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Bhakra Byas Management Board Security Department.
According to various media reports, the IB reports said that the LeT has been training its cadres for cliff-climbing, swimming across water channels and handling of explosives with the intention to target major dams in India particularly those located in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh.
The dam was part of the larger multipurpose Bhakra Nangal Project, which aims to prevent floods in the Sutluj-Beas river valley, to provide irrigation to adjoining states and to provide hydro-electricity. (ANI)
