Jhargram (West Bengal), July 17 (ANI): A forest festival commenced in Jhargram, West Bengal, over the weekend, with the objective of promoting plantation of more trees.
The 'Aranya Utsav 2011' is one of the oldest forest festivals of the state and is considered a haven for environmentalists, who visit the district each year to spread awareness about the conservation of forests.
Social activists and environmentalists urged the locals to be conscious about their environment and also pressed the need for plantation of more trees to avoid environmental hazards.
"It is sad to see trees being knocked down regularly. Previously, Jhargram was covered with dense forests. But, now the district wears an empty look; there are vast stretches of barren land. Due to this reason, the environmental equilibrium has been affected," said Sukumar Hansda, legislator, (Jhargram district)
A common sight was the school children holding small plants in their hands, to aid in the promotion of a healthy environment.
Legislator Sukumar Hansda, asserted the importance of a clean environment.
"By planting more and more trees, we want to encourage locals to come forward and do the same, so that we can make our environment greener and cleaner," said Hansda.
The festival will end on July 21.
