Hyderabad, July 17 (ANI): Authorities at the Chanchalguda Jail in Hyderabad have opened a bakery at a special prison for women, to make the best use of their time in jail and earn revenue through the sale of products manufactured by the prisoners.
C N Gopinath Reddy, Director General of Prisons said thirty five women prisoners were trained to make various bakery items, including bread, cashews, coconut, almond, fruit, salt and Osmania biscuits, egg puffs, vegetable puffs and cakes.
"This bakery has been started very recently but we have done certain trial orders also and we have tried to manufacture the best of the best possible biscuits, buns, breads, cakes and we have made our best efforts to bring our own brand. So, our brand name is Sudhar. The Sudhar brand is something, which we want to establish as one of the best brand in the country itself, with this intension we have started this bakery," said Reddy.
The products would be sold at a shop that would be set up near the jail.
Reddy added that this initiative was taken to keep the prisoners busy and make them overcome of suicidal feelings.
"In that way, we will be keeping them busy, once they get into this sort of work, they are busy, they get out of the suicidal feelings and brooding over the matters unnecessarily and causing lot problems to their health. These are all by products from this and this makes the human relations also stronger because inmates become so close to each other because they have to work together, they form a team as a result they will be having social acceptability among themselves, forgetting about their backgrounds," added Reddy.
Reddy said there were government schemes that would help the prisoners get financial assistance once thy get out of jail and they would be self-employed.
The prisoners said they are enjoying working in the unit and this has helped them relieve from the tension and they have learned a lot.
"We are working in this bakery from last 15 days and we are enjoying working here. When we didn't have any work we used to keep thinking about our family and we used to be tensed about our children and the time we are working in this bakery, we are enjoying and are getting to learn a lot," said Renuka, a female prisoner.
Reddy said another bakery would be started at the Central Prison, Cherlapalli, the major plan is to come out with a glucose biscuits and compete with other brands for market share.
Skilled prisoners who work in the manufacturing units in prisons get Rs 70 per day and their total wages are handed over to them when they leave the prison after their term.
The state prisons department with 16,000 prisoners at its disposal aims at earning revenue of Rs. 300 million per annum.
The department presently earns Rs. 20 million through the sale of the products manufactured by prisoners in state jails. (ANI)
