Tokyo, July 16(ANI): The Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) has formally put Tokyo in the race to host the 2020 Olympics.
JOC President Tsunekazu Takeda made the announcement at a reception marking the 100th anniversary of the committee.
International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Jacques Rogge attended the reception.I'd like to take this opportunity to officially announce that we will bid to host the 2020 Olympics," The Telegraph quoted Takeda, as saying.
"Yesterday (Friday), we received a formal letter of intent from Tokyo Governor Shintaro Ishihara which was officially accepted at our board meeting earlier today," he added.
The IOC has begun the selection process for the 2020 Olympics' host city, which will be elected in Buenos Aires on September 7, 2013.
Tokyo, which hosted Asia's first Olympics in 1964, had lost out to Rio de Janeiro in the race to host the 2016 Games.
Rome, Madrid and Istanbul have currently officially registered their 2020 bid. (ANI)
