Dhanbad, July 11 (ANI): Coalmines in Jharkhand have been incurring colossal losses due to frequent and prolonged shutdowns called by Maoists in the region.
Apart from the management of coalmines, workers in coal loading yards, truck owners and drivers shared their views on the shutdowns here today.
They lamented that the shutdown calls often bring their routine life to a standstill.
"When there are shutdowns, trains cannot run on schedule. Our powerhouses and those other units that need coal are not able to get the goods on time," said Anand Sagar Upadhyay, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Dhanbad, East Central Railway.
Over the past couple of years the rebel outfits have been frequently declaring shutdowns in the region, affecting several government and private business firms.
The worst hit are manual labourers at the coal yards, who are deprived of their daily bread as and when the Maoists impose shutdown.
"We load and unload coal here. When a shutdown is called it becomes difficult to get our earnings and have to struggle for two square meals a day. Our lives depend on this. As of now there is no shutdown but when there is a shutdown it is going to be very difficult," said Sarfaraz Aslam, a labourer. (ANI)
