India welcomes U.S. decision to suspend military aid to Pakistan

New Delhi , Mon, 11 Jul 2011 ANI

New Delhi, July 11 (ANI): External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna on Monday said India welcomes the decision of the United States to suspend millions of dollars of military aid to Pakistan.

"India has constantly taken the view that it is not desirable that this region is to be heavily armed by the United States which would upset the equilibrium of the region itself, to that extent, India welcomes this step," he told reporters here.

Krishna said he was looking forward to the proposed visit of his Pakistani counterpart in the last week of the month to resolve the outstanding issues.

"I am sure that the United State also must take note of the fact we are working in a very committed manner to normalize our relationship with Pakistan, to reduce the trust deficit and efforts are on. I am expecting Foreign Minister of Pakistan to come to Indian towards the end of the month," he added.

Krishna also condemned the 'militant attack' in Islamabad.

"Well, if it is attack by terrorists or terror oriented organization, then India condemns all such attempts. India condemns terror attacks across the globe," he added.

Nearly $800 million in military aid and equipment, or over one-third of more than $2 billion in annual American security assistance to Pakistan might be affected, according to the 'The New York Times'.

The move comes as ploy to exert pressure on Islamabad to fight militants more effectively, and after Pakistan expelled over 100 US Army Special Forces trainers from the country.

The nuclear-armed rivals resumed peace talks, but have made little progress due to lack of trust.

Ties between both the countries went into deep chill following the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks in which more than160 people were killed. (ANI)
