Patna, July 11 (ANI): To keep the river Ganges clean, Bharatiya Janata Party leader Uma Bharti has urged the general public to join the Save Ganges River Campaign for its conservation and cleaning.
Speaking to mediapersons, Bharti also appealed to the Central and State Governments to contribute to the campaign and make it pollution-free along its course from Gangotri in Uttarakhand to Gangasagar in West Bengal.
"I have full confidence that our Save Ganges campaign will gather people and then from Gangotri to Gangasagar. Millions of people will stand together in hand in hand and Ganges will once again become the river it was it was 50 years ago. We appeal to scientists, central government, and state government and with the support of the people, we will make an effort and that is what I pray to goddess river Ganges," she said.
Bharti also urged the central government to declare River Ganges as a national asset and create a board to look after the problems of the 2,510-kilometre-long river.
The Indian government had availed one billion dollar loan from the World Bank in April to fund an eight-year project to clean the river, larges stretches of which are heavily polluted by industrial and domestic waste. (ANI)
