Fatehpur (Uttar Pradesh), July 10(ANI): The Indian Railways has said that rescue operations are in full swing at the site where Kalka Mail train derailed on Sunday.
At least 10 passengers were killed and over 100 injured when the train derailed near Fatehpur district in Uttar Pradesh. The death toll is expected to rise.
"The death of ten people has been confirmed to us by the railway doctor there. However, we anticipate that this figure, unfortunately, may rise. About hundred people have also suffered injures, they have been removed or are in the process of being removed to the Fatehpur district hospital," said Chandralekha Mukherjee, senior official in Indian Railways.
"All the senior railway officials there are involved in quick rescue and rehabilitation, not only of the passengers who have been hurt in this accident, but also to restore the traffic on that particular route," she added.
Mukherjee also said that a team of over 120 rescuers from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was on their way to the accident site.
The Indian Army also has been contacted for further assistance.
"The NDRF team comprising of 120 odd people who will help the passengers medically is on its way at the behest of Chairman of the Railway board. The Chairman of Railway Board, Vinay Mittal spoke to the army authorities and requested their help, keeping in view the accident and its consequences, it was advance action that we took," Mukherjee said.
"Our medical teams are also available at the site, and work of relief and rescue is at full swing," she added.
The accident has disrupted rail traffic on the New Delhi-Howrah mainline.
According to railway sources, the derailed bogies included three air-conditioned coaches, five sleeper coaches, two general coaches, one pantry car and one engine.
The accident took place near the East Cabin of the Malwa station.
The train, which was bound for Kalka, was running at the speed of over 100 km/hour when it came across the mishap. (ANI)
