Kolkata, July 9 (ANI): Expressing happiness over the consent given by West Bengal government for the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to be carried forward, Gorkha Janmukti Morcha General Secretary Roshan Giri has said the agreement will now be presented before the central government to facilitate the creation of a separate Gorkhaland state.
Talking to reporters here after meeting Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday, Giri said they are expecting a meeting to be called soon by the central government over their prolonged demand of a separate state within the next few days.
"Today the state government would be sending the Memorandum of Agreement to the central government and we hope that tripartite talks would be held by the government within one week to 10 days and the agreement will be signed. We had also made a courtesy call on Mamata Banerjee; so there has been a mutual consent over the final draft of the memorandum of agreement by the state government and Gorkha Janmukti Morcha," he added.
A renewed demand for a separate Gorkhaland region, which would include Darjeeling and some contiguous areas of Jalpaiguri District, has created fresh turmoil over the past few months.
The Gorkha population in West Bengal is estimated to be around a million. (ANI)
