New Delhi, July 6 (ANI): The Central Government on Wednesday announced that it has released Rs. 119.5 crore to twelve states for the integrated development of fodder under Accelerated Fodder Development Programme (AFDP) in fiscal 2011-12 so far.
In a statement it said that a total sum of Rs. 300 crore has been allocated for this programme in 2011-12 as part of the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY).
Of the Rs.119.5 crore released so far, Andhra Pradesh and Bihar have received Rs. 12. 25 crores each. The state of Rajasthan has received over Rs.22 crores, while the states of Karnataka, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh have received Rs.15 crore each. The state of Punjab has received Rs.7.75 crores.
The states of Gujarat, Haryana and Tamil Nadu are yet to receive their share of the allocated fodder money.
The programme envisages accelerating production of fodder through promotion of integrated technologies and processes for enhancing the availability of fodder throughout the year. It proposes a multi-pronged strategy to achieve the stated objectives.
The livestock sector in India contributes to nearly 32 percent of total agricultural output. India, with 2.3 percent share of global geographical area, supports nearly 20 percent of the livestock population of the world and therefore requires a steady supply of fodder for supporting the huge livestock population.
Only four percent of total cropping area is under fodder cultivation. It has resulted in a severe deficit of green fodder (36 percent), dry fodder (40 percent) and concentrates (57 percent).
The scheme aims at bridging this shortfall in demand for fodder from crop residues and agricultural bi-products.(ANI)
