Karachi, July 5(ANI): The Sindh High Court (SHC) has summoned the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on July 26, seeking its explanation on a constitutional petition filed by discarded leg-spinner Danish Kaneria for allegedly being snubbed by the national selectors.
The court has also restrained the PCB from using derogatory remarks against Kaneria, terming him an asset to the country, and stated that he is innocent unless his guilt is proven.
Kaneria was arrested last year on spot-fixing charges during a match against Durham in 2009, but was later released without being charged.
Kaneria's lawyer Muhammad Farogh Naseem told the court that because of the investigation carried out against him by the Essex Police, the PCB had stopped the leg-spinner from playing for Pakistan, but even after he was cleared, the board still did not select him for the national side.
Meanwhile, PCB's legal adviser Taffazul Rizvi said that the court orders would be followed.
"Once we get the orders, we'll follow them. Usually such orders seek a reply, so we'll submit one," The Express Tribune quoted Rizvi, as saying.
Keen to revive his career, Kaneria had an email from Essex sent to the PCB in May, in which the club had thanked him for his services and explained the reasons why he was not being offered another contract.
But the board rejected it, saying that 'clearance' letter sent by Kaneria had failed to satisfy the PCB's Integrity Committee, and that it wanted something more concrete.
"The supporting email he has sent was more than six months old and is already on the records of PCB. After taking legal opinion and after confirming with the ECB, PCB considers that [the] said document fails to satisfy the requirements by PCB," PCB spokesman Nadeem Sarwar said in May. (ANI)
