New Delhi, July 4 (ANI): The Supreme Court today appointed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to monitor the probe and the steps being taken to unearth the black money stashed away in safe havens abroad.
Former Supreme Court Judge B P Jeevan Reddy will head the high-level committee, which has been empowered to travel to other nations and to collect information from the respective government agencies.
The apex court has appointed former Judge Justice M B Shah as the vice-chairman of the SIT panel.
The SIT, which will now take over from a committee set up earlier by the government, will report directly to the court.
The committee that was earlier set up by the Centre was headed by the Revenue Secretary and included economists who were asked to outline a new strategy to check and recover black money.
The Supreme Court has also ordered the government to reveal the names of 26 Indians, who have kept black money stashed away in the LGT Bank in Liechtenstein.
The Central Government had earlier opposed the revealing of the names of the 26 account holders, saying it would violate a bilateral agreement.
The black money issue has been haunting the government for several months in the wake of the Supreme Court closely following developments related to the tracking down of black money stashed abroad. (ANI)
