Karachi, July 1(ANI): Former Pakistan cricketers and cricket administrators have welcomed the International Cricket Council's (ICC) decision of ending political interference in the functioning of member boards saying it is a positive sign for the country's future in the sport.
The ICC Full Council meeting culminating in the body's annual conference in Hong Kong set a deadline of 2012 to have free elections and end political appointments in all cricket boards.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) currently has the country's president as its Patron-in-Chief who has the power to nominate the PCB Chairman. This setup will be overhauled following the amendment in the ICC Constitution. Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are the two other countries with similar set-ups.
According to former cricketers and administrators, the fresh directives by the ICC are going to change fortunes of Pakistan cricket.
"A politics-free PCB will be a very good change," The Express Tribune quoted the legendary batsman Hanif Mohammad, as saying.
Karachi City Cricket Association President Sirajul Islam Bukhari pointed out that the board would face obstacles while implementing the changes.
"It will be very difficult to implement the change. But in the long run it is very good for our cricket's future. We will definitely improve as a cricketing nation", he said.
Former PCB executive Arif Abassi said the amendment was required.
He said: "It should have been made years ago. The new system will help find competent people to run our cricketing affairs, which is a good sign."
The Senate Standing Committee on Sports (SSCS) also supported the amendment.
"We are ready to help the PCB in bringing these reforms," SSCS member Tahir Mashaadi said. (ANI)
