Purulia case: CBI to appeal against verdict

New Delhi , Thu, 30 Jun 2011 ANI

New Delhi, June 30 (ANI): The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) issued a statement on Thursday saying that it will appeal through the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) against verdict in the Purulia arms drop case.

The investigating agency said that it will appeal the Government of Denmark through the Ministry of External Affairs.

Meanwhile, Home Secretary R K Singh commenting on the verdict said the case is not over yet.

"The government will appeal for Davy's extradition in Danish Supreme Court," said Singh.

The Danish High Court giving a verdict in favour of Kim Davy in the Purulia arms drop case said Davy cannot be extradited to India.

The judges upheld the magistrate's order that had held that there was a real and present danger that Davy, if he was handed over to India for prosecution in Kolkata would be subjected to torture in jail.

The Danish government got a number of assurances from India with two important ones being that no death penalty would be given to him and permission to serve imprisonment, if decided by court.

The CBI had registered the case on December 28, 1995 after sophisticated arms including AK-47 assault rifles, anti-tank grenades and other weapons were dropped from a foreign plane in the fields of Purulia in West Bengal on the night of December 17, 1995.

An Interpol Red Corner Notice was issued against Kim Davy in 1996 on the request of the agency.

The Purulia arms drop case was an infamous incident in which unauthorised arms were dropped from an Antonov An-26 aircraft in West Bengal's Purulia District on December 17, 1995.

A Latvian aircraft dropped a large consignment of arms including several hundred AK-47 rifles and more than a million rounds of ammunition over a large area in Jhalda, Ghatanga, Belamu, Maramu villages of Purulia district on the night of December 17, 1995.

Several days later, when the plane re-entered Indian airspace, it was intercepted by the Indian Air Force MiG-21 and forced to land in Mumbai. (ANI)
