Midnapore, June 22 (ANI): West Bengal Irrigation Minister Manas Bhunia, who visited the flood-hit areas of West Midnapore, assured locals of immediate rescue and relief operations.
Torrential rain over the last few days due to an intense depression over the Bay of Bengal has rendered almost two lakh people homeless in East Midnapore in West Bengal.
Sabong and Daspur regions in West Midnapore have been critically affected.
Bhunia said the aim of the state government is to provide immediate help to the people who have lost their homes.
"Our first priority is to rescue the affected people and send relief teams and, we need to begin the repair work of river banks when the water level comes down. Today, I will meet all district magistrates, irrigation officers and other officials," he added.
People who have lost their homes in the flood have been shifted to relief camps.
The floods have also disrupted transportation and communication services between Kolkata, Midnapore, Haldia and Bankura.
Gushing waters have submerged houses, villages and destroyed vast stretches of agricultural lands, forcing thousands of families to leave their homes. (ANI)
