New Delhi, June 13 (ANI): Demanding a thorough investigation into the alleged rape and murder of a teenaged girl at Nighasan police station in Lakhimpur District, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday accused the Mayawati Government of shielding the accused.
Party Spokesman Prakash Javdekar said that Crime Branch-CID is not the right agency to carry out the probe.
Earlier, the Uttar Pradesh Government has ordered a CB-CID probe into the case.
"At a high-level meeting late last night, it was decided that the probe into the death of the girl should be handed over to the CB-CID," a senior police officer said.
The CB-CID has been asked to submit its report within a week's time, the officer said.
An FIR has been lodged against a sub-inspector and two policemen for tampering with evidence.
The government has also ordered a fresh post-mortem of the victim by a panel of doctors from other districts.
Earlier, Divisional Commissioner Lucknow Prashant Dwiwedii said: "We have taken a strong view of the evidence being tampered with at the crime scene."
" Whenever there is any kind of crime, the place should be left undisturbed. In this case it was not done so and we have therefore lodged an FIR against a sub-inspector and two other constables," he added.
Missing since Friday evening, the girl was found hanging from a tree inside the premises of Nighasan Police Station.
The victim's mother in her complaint had alleged that the girl was raped and murdered. (ANI)
