New Delhi, June 4(ANI): President Pratibha Devisingh Patil has condoled the sad demise of former Haryana Chief Minister and leading Jat leader Bhajan Lal, who died in a local hospital in Hisar following a massive heart attack on Friday evening.
In her condolence message, President Patil said: "Bhajan Lal was a veteran Parliamentarian and an able administrator who served the nation in different spheres."
"He was always concerned about the welfare and upliftment of the poor, downtrodden and especially the farmers. In his passing away, the nation has lost a grass root politician and an eminent public figure," he added.
Bhajan Lal was born in Koranwali, Bahawalpur District, now in Punjab (Pakistan) in a Bishnois sub-caste.
He was the chief minister of Haryana twice. He became chief minister for the first time from June 28, 1979 to July 5, 1985. He became a chief minister for a second time from July 23, 1991 to May 11, 1996.
He also served as union cabinet minister, holding the agriculture and environment and forest portfolio during the Rajiv Gandhi administration. (ANI)
