New Delhi, May 20 (ANI): Normal life was thrown out of gear in New Delhi on Friday as thousands of autorickshaws remained off roads after their unions called for an indefinite strike to protest the state government's decision to install Global Positioning Systems (GPS) in their rickshaws.
Over 55,000 of the national capital's autorickshaws did not ply, and the ones that did charged commuters heavily.
"Today is the auto (autorickshaw) strike and I am facing so many problems, as I have to go for an interview and no autorickshaw is there. After that I have to return to my office also. This creates lots of issues. My office has been calling me over and over, but I am unable to go," complained Shibi, a local.
Daily commuters were the worst hit, as autorickshaws are one of the prime modes of transport in the city.
Meanwhile, Sikandar, an autorickshaw driver, said that even two days of strike is causing them enormous losses.
He said that installing a GPS is a losing proposition for autorickshaws as they can be stolen easily.
"Firstly, my problem is that GPS should not be installed. Secondly, even if GPS is installed anybody can steal it. We will complain about it, but they (police) will put the charge on only us that where is our GPS. No passengers would come if anybody steals it, then what can we do about it?" Sikandar said.
The unions have said they are not opposed to installing GPS, but want the authorities to bear the 7,500-rupee cost. (ANI)
