Mumbai, Mar.25 (ANI): The Maharashtra legislative assembly has suspended nine MLAs belonging to the Shiv Sena and the Bharatiya Janata Party for disrupting a budget speech by the Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar.
They have been suspended for shouting slogans, displaying banners and not obeying the speaker.
The suspended MLAs, who claim that they were exposing hollow promises made by the government, will only be allowed to attend the House proceedings after December 31, 2011.
Eknath Shinde, one of the suspended Shiv Sena MLAs, said: " This (suspension) is the murder of democracy. We had placed banners there (in the assembly). The government had made some declarations in the last two or three sessions, which were not implemented. Those promises were on paper only. We were protesting against this through these banners."
The nine suspended MLAs are Vinod Ghosalkar, Ravindra Waikar, Pratap Sarnaik, Eknath Shinde and Vijay Shivtare from the Shiv Sena, and Harish Pimple, Girish Mahajan, Vijay Deshmukh and Sardar Tara Singh from the BJP. (ANI)
