Melbourne, Mar. 23 (ANI): McLaren bosses have scrapped the car's radical exhaust system just days before the season-opening Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne on Sunday.
The duo's Woking outfit has been forced to take the risk after they were off the pace in pre-season testing and dogged by reliability problems, The Sun reports.
The switch to a simpler exhaust and floor on the troubled MP4-26 car could bring a vital second-a-lap performance gain.
But team chief Martin Whitmarsh admitted: "We have made some fairly dramatic changes. There's some risk in that.
"I think it was the right thing to do and we're hopeful the risk comes off and the car is a lot more competitive in Australia.
"I'm not satisfied with where the car was on reliability or performance tests.
"We have a completely new floor and a new exhaust system. There are a lot of other bits and pieces but they're the clear and obvious ones that people will see in Australia.
"It will be a challenging weekend but I'm hopeful that we'll put on more than a second in performance," he said. (ANI)
