Wikileaks cables are accurate: Narendra Modi

Gandhinagar, Tue, 22 Mar 2011 ANI

Gandhinagar, Mar.22 (ANI): Gujarat's chief minister Narendra Modi has said that WikiLeaks cables about him are accurate and speak well of his stance against America's take on communal riots in the state.

In a cable dated November 2006, the US Consul-General in Mumbai, Michael S. Owen had described Modi as a 'no-nonsense, effective administrator who has reduced corruption in public life in Gujarat'.

Reacting to the exposed cables about the U.S. reminding Modi of his role in failing to control riots in 2002, the state chief said he had clearly told America they 'cannot preach about human rights violations'.

"I am a person involved with the pride of India. I clearly said America cannot preach to us about human rights violations. I counted all the incidents where the U.S. has abused human rights. I narrated them all and that is what WikiLeaks mentioned today in news reports." Modi said.

"At least I am glad that the reporting of the cable was based on proof and was accurate," he added.

The United States had revoked Modi's visa in March 2005 after his administration failed to control the communal riots in Godhra.

Modi noted the cables mentioned him fairly and said he was a 'good Indian leader'.

"They have said Modi is 'un-corruptible'. To say a person in non-corrupt is one thing but the report America has sent mentions me as 'un-corruptible' based on interactions with people." Modi said.

"On one side it is being said, 'Indian government is completely corrupt'. Then there are reports by America and WikiLeaks, which refer to the state of Gujarat where the leader is un-corruptible," he added.

According to the report, the US administration, which had earlier denied any engagement with Modi at the ambassadorial level, was evaluating the BJP leader's prospects of assuming a leadership role at the national level. (ANI)
