London, Mar 9 (ANI): England fast bowler Stuart Broad, suffered more heartbreak after being ruled out of the World Cup due to side strain, hopes to get fit for forst Test against Sri Lanka this summer.
An early exit from the World Cup completes a miserable winter for Broad, who was invalided out of The Ashes series after the Second Test with a torn stomach muscle.
England is likely to register Chris Tremlett as a replacement. The 6ft 7in Surrey bowler performed brilliantly when he covered for Broad in the final three Ashes Tests.
Broad said: "I'm heartbroken to be going home again - World Cups are very special and a highlight of any player's career."
"But I'm only 24 and need to get my long-term health right. I don't want to risk a complete rip in the side because there's a lot of cricket coming up in the next year. I'll go home and make sure I'm fit for the First Test of the summer against Sri Lanka at the end of May," The Sun quoted him, as saying.
"This was nothing like The Ashes injury. I felt that one straight away but here there was just a little stiffness and I thought nothing more of it. But obviously my adrenalin was pumping through the game against South Africa.
"Two hours later, it was stiffening up and feeling sore and it hurts when I cough. As a bowler, you have to give side strains time to be 100 per cent right or they'll just be a weak spot," Broad said. (ANI)
