Australia's dependence on pacers to win World Cup is risky ploy: Waugh

New Delhi , Sun, 13 Feb 2011 ANI

New Delhi, Feb 13 (ANI): Former skipper Steve Waugh, who captained Australia to World Cup victory in 1999, has said that relying on pacers to retain World Cup in the Indian subcontinent is a risky ploy.

Waugh said relying on strike bowlers Brett Lee, Shaun Tait, Mitchell Johnson and Doug Bollinger is an unusual move for tournament being hosted by India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

"We've taken an aggressive approach by picking four fast bowlers which I'm not sure any other country has done," Waugh told reporters here.

"This is a strategy which is either going to work very well or not work well at all. So the jury's out but I think Australia is in form," The Sydney Morning Herald quoted him, as saying.

Australia has picked only one frontline spinner, Jason Krejza, in their 15-man squad.

Krejza will have some assistance from part-time slow bowlers like David Hussey, Steve Smith and Michael Clarke.

Australia are set to test their pace theory on India in a warm-up game in Bangalore with another warm-up game on Tuesday against South Africa in Bangalore. (ANI)
