For people who have kept old Rs 500 notes to buy railway, metro or bus tickets this news is not so good for them. The government has now changed and decided to advance the last usage of Rs 500 notes from December 15 to December 10.
The Finance Ministry issued a notification in which it indicates the changes.
The Reserve Bank of India said in its FAQs (frequently asked questions) that using old Rs 500 notes will be discontinued with effect from December 10 midnight at railway ticketing counters, to buy tickets of government or public sector undertaking buses and to pay catering services on board during travel by rail.
The usage of old Rs 500 notes will also be discontinued for making payments to buy tickets for travel by suburban and metro rail services.
As stated earlier, the government hospitals for medical treatment and pharmacies in government hospitals to buy medicines with doctor’s prescription will accept Rs 500 old notes till December 15.
The old notes of Rs 500 will also be accepted at milk booths operating under the authorization of the central or state governments, at crematoria and burial grounds, in all pharmacies on production of doctor’s prescription and proof identity and to purchase LPG cylinders. It will also accepted to buy entry tickets for monuments maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India.
Some other areas where old notes of Rs 500 will be accepted are for paying charges, fees, taxes or penalties, payable to the central or state governments including municipal and local bodies, towards utility charges for water and electricity, for court fees and fees up to Rs 2000 per student in central and state government, municipal and local body schools.
