Hobart, Jan 21(ANI): Australia on Friday defeated England by 46 runs in the second one-day international played at Hobart's Bellerive Oval after Shaun Marsh's brilliant ton rescued the home team in the first innings.

Chasing 231 for victory, the Andrew Strauss-led England team was bowled out for 184 in 45 overs.

Australian fast bowlers Brett Lee and Doug Bollinger looked to have the visitors rattled early on with three quick wickets.

However, Ian Bell (32) and Jonathan Trott (32) looked to dig England out of trouble with a cautious 47-run partnership off 15 overs.

That came to an end when spinner Steve Smith made the all-important breakthrough, luring Trott to smack his shot straight at David Hussey at midwicket, ABC Sports reported.

Middle-order batsman Ian Morgan (21) and Michael Yardy (22) along with tailenders Tim Bresnan (19) and James Tremwell (16) then tried to rescue the home side from the brink, but failed in their efforts.

Doug Bollinger was the most successful bowler for the Aussies finishing with match figures of 4-28 from nine overs.

Earlier in the day, Marsh, recalled to the side for the injured Mike Hussey, scored one of the greatest ODI hundreds for Australia to guide the home side to 230.

Invited to bat first, the home team was in enormous trouble at 4-33 before Marsh (110) and Cameron White (45) shared a 100-run partnership.

He later shared a record ninth-wicket partnership of 88 with Bollinger, who scored a career-best 30, to bail the team out of danger.

It was Marsh's second ODI century.

Shane Watson (five), Brad Haddin (five), skipper Michael (10), David Hussey (eight), Steve Smith (0) were all dismissed cheaply as Chris Tremlett finished with figures of 4-33 and Ajmal Shahzad 3-43.

Australia now leads the seven-match series 2-0. (ANI)
