The Delhi Jal Board has achieved a new landmark by increasing the sewage treatment of 450 Million Gallon per day (MGD) or 2250 Million Litres per day (MLD) in Delhi. The inflow of sewage is increasing daily and it is targeted to enhance the sewerage treatment to 500 MGD by end of this year.
The substantial increase in quantity of sewage treated at the STPs of DJB has been possible due to increased inflow of sewage by intercepting drains and covering more colonies under the sewerage network. These drains were directly or indirectly falling into river Yamuna and were thus increasing the pollution load of the river. Interception and diversion of these drains to the STPs has contributed to reduction in the pollution load in river.
Sh. Kapil Mishra, Minister for Water and Chairperson, DJB said, "At DJB, our focus is on water recycling to optimise the use of precious water resources in Delhi. Increasing the sewage treatment capacity will result in the creation and nurturing of a water cycle that has a minimal impact on the environment. Treating sewage to quality standards will help in the rejuvenation of Delhi's lifeline, the Yamuna river."
The Delhi Jal Board has 30 STPs at 17 different locations across Delhi. It's DJB's endeavor to enhance the quantity of sewage treated in these plants to 600 MGD in one year which will surely a big step forward towards the goal of cleaning rive Yamuna. Operationalization of all the packages of Interceptor Sewer Project in next one year will help DJB in achieving the optimal utilization of existing STPs and making valuable contribution towards cleaning of Yamuna river.
