Today, The Union cabinet approved the amendments to the much awaited Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Bill, 2014. According to the new amendments, child charged with the serious crime such as rape and murder will be treated as adults, it has also provision for the death sentence or life term.
The Juvenile Justice (JJ) boards will have the prerogative to decide whether the case will tried in a regular court or in Juvenile court.
The bill is set to introduce in the ongoing session of the Parliament.
The brutal gangrape of a 23-year-old woman in a moving bus in the December 2012, in which one accused case is a juvenile was serious crime against the humanity.
The government is working fast towards the clearance of the Bill. This bill was sent for inter-ministrial consultations only last week. There is good changes of getting this bill passed and the women and child welfare ministry is keen to see this passed as soon as possible. However the on going session of the Parliament is ending on August 14.
