The Chief Secretary, Government of NCT of Delhi Shri S.K. Srivastava flagged off the "12th Run against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking" on the occasion of 'International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking' at India Gate in New Delhi today. Union Minister of Social Justice & Empowerment Shri Thawar Singh Gehlot was the Chief Guest while Chairman, Environment Protection Controlling Authority Dr. Bhurelal, DG, Narcotics Control Bureau, Ministry of Home Affairs Shri Rajiv Mehta, GM, ONGC Shri V. Kumar Mahendru, Principal Secretary, Women & Child Development, Prohibition & Drug Abuse Prevention Dr. Satbir Silas Bedi and Director (WCD) Mrs. Soumya Gupta were also present on this occasion.
While flagging off the Mass run, Shri Srivastava urged people especially youth to come forward and participate in this noble venture. He said that no individual, family or community is safe where illicit drugs take control. Shri Srivastava added that this year’s theme "Make health your new high in life, not drugs. No Place for Drugs" is of quite importance and relevance for all times to come.
Chief Secretary also administered pledge to the participants to make society free from drug abuse and illicit trafficking. A series of cultural programs were also presented on the India Gate Lawns giving thematic message to the people not to consume any types of drugs. The event was jointly organized by Narcotics Control Bureau, Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, NISD, Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, GOI and the Directorate of Prohibition & Department of Women & Child Development, Government of Delhi.
About 5000 enthusiasts from all walks of life including the team members of Narcotics Bureau, Delhi Police, Civil Defence, NCC, ONGC, IPGCL, Petronet LNG, Corporate/Organizations, NGOs, school children, Education Institutions took part in the run. They were taking in their hands huge placards and banners displaying the various messages against drug abuse and its ill effects on human life.
Giving details about the event, Dr. Satbir Silas Bedi said that to observe the International Day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking, a run is organized every year for the last 11 years at India Gate Lawns wherein the Department of Women and Child Development, Government of Delhi has been the facilitator of the event every year since 2003. Dr. Bedi further said that the aim of the program is to spread awareness among one and all.
It may be recalled that the UN General Assembly in 1987, decided to observe the 26th June as the International Day against drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking as an expression of its determination to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve a society free of drug abuse. To mark this occasion, a series of public events are organized across countries in partnership with governments, civil society, media and public & private sector.
