Bungling in taxes being recovered by DJB in unauthorized colonies

New Delhi, Sun, 02 Nov 2014 NI Wire

General Secretary of United Residents of Delhi Shri Saurabh Gandhi said that it is pitiable that how the Delhi Jal Board is committing bungling in recovering taxes in the name of new water supply connections from the residents of unauthorized colonies.

Shri Saurabh Gandhi said that Shri RD Pal the General Secretary of RWA Shashtri Park extension (Member of URD Group) informed that the DJB is recovering various types of taxes in the name of new water connections. We told him to get information in this regard through the RTI. They asked which government agency is being paid Rs. 800 from every consumer for the repair of roads. DJB was not in a position to give any reply.

After that, there was a hearing on 31 st Oct, 2014 before the first Appeal Authority. The first Appeal Authority did not reply to the RTI but used offensive language and told Shri RD Pal that Delhi has been ruined due to you people. You people have occupied the land without paying anything and now refusing to pay taxes to the Government. The DJB is recovering Rs. 440 per sq. mtr. from each consumer for a water connection, Rs. 250 for opening water connection, Rs. 250 in the name of security money and Rs. 800 for the repair of roads.

The previous Governments had not handed over the unauthorized colonies to the Municipal Corporations and hence the Corporations could not start development work in these unauthorized colonies. The Delhi Jal Board can neither start road construction in these colonies nor allot fund to another department for this purpose. Where the money is being diverted? The consumers themselves get the pipelines laid, meters fitted and roads repaired. Then what is the justification in recovering money from the people. URD demands that this recovery should be stopped immediately.
