Patients continue to suffer as doctors' strike intensifies in UP

Lucknow, Mar. 5 (ANI): Patients continued to suffer due to doctors' stir that has hit health services in several parts of Uttar Pradesh as the strike by junior doctors went on for another day on Wednesday, following the arrest of their co-workers after a scuffle with a legislator last week.

The patients in Uttar Pradesh said the doctors did not turn up at the hospitals, alleging that the administration was torturing the medical students.

"Today was my appointment date. I reached the hospital with a lot of difficulty, but after reaching I was informed that today again they are on strike. In this rift between the doctors and the patients, the patient always becomes the victim. They should at least ensure separate arrangements for patients in such a situation, at least arrange another doctor. In such critical situations patients are bound to die," said a patient from northern Lucknow city, Shyam Sunder.

Earlier on Tuesday police baton charged members of the Bharatiya Janta Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the youth wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), while they took to streets to protest against the arrest of junior doctors in Lucknow.

Doctors from medical colleges in Delhi also staged demonstration by observing a 'black badge' day on Tuesday, supporting the cause of the doctor's strike in Kanpur.

With no one to attend the sick and ailing, the strike has added to the woes of patients and a few have already lost their lives.

"There is no doctor coming to the hospital. We have not been able to get any medicines or care. Our patient is in a critical state. The patient was admitted on February 25 and now it has been more than eight to nine days," said a relative of a patient admitted to a hospital in Kanpur, Sukhwinder.

Meanwhile, a relative of another patient in Allahabad, Bhanu Pratap, said the admitted patients are also not receiving proper care and attention due to the ongoing strike.

"We are facing a lot of difficulties because of the strike. We are also not receiving any facilities. No doctor is coming to check the patients," said Pratap.

Moreover, 200 doctors from Medical College in Agra have resigned, intensifying the strike.

The doctors on strike are demanding the release of the arrested junior doctors after a clash with a legislator.

The stand-off started when a patient approached Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Irfan Solanki to be accorded preferential treatment by hospital authorities, but doctors refused to pay heed to the recommendation.

Later, Solanki walked into the hospital and a heated argument followed with the doctors. Some doctors allegedly attacked the legislator, resulting in head injuries to him.

As a result, police baton charged the doctors and many junior doctors were arrested in raids conducted in hostels after the incident. This led to resentment among the doctors and they called for strike in a few hospitals, which took a toll on five lives.

The doctors also accused the police of planting firearms in the hostels and victimising medical students.

The protesting doctors have refused to end their agitation until their peers are released from police custody.

An investigation into the matter has been ordered by the state government. (ANI)
