How 'egg freezing' can be game changer for urban women

New Delhi, Tue, 25 Feb 2014 ANI

New Delhi, Feb. 25 (ANI): The option of egg freezing is fast catching up with urban couples as the method safeguards their hope of conception at any point of their lives.

Today, Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) has made revolutionary and ground-breaking advancements. It provides multiple techniques to help couples dream of having a perfect family and bearing children, even those who have been marred due to unfortunate health ailments and other reasons.

And, one such technology- which is fast gaining acceptance and momentum with urban Indian women- is oocyte cryopreservation which is commonly known as egg freezing, Parents India magazine reported.

Dr Hrishikesh D. Pai, director infertility, Fortis La Femme, Delhi, explained that egg freezing is a novel technology in which a woman's eggs (oocytes) are extracted, frozen and stored.

Later, when she is ready to become pregnant, the eggs are thawed, fertilised and transferred to the uterus as embryos, the doctor said.

Pai further explained that when the eggs are mature, a medication to trigger ovulation is given and the eggs are extracted using an ultrasound guided needle through the vagina and then immediately frozen at a controlled rate and temperature.

Egg freezing can help safeguard the fertility potential of women who are battling cancer as the treatment involves chemotherapy and radiotherapy and is deadly for a woman's eggs and can potentially damage the ovaries.

Additionally, women with a family history of early menopause can also benefit from this technique.

Researchers claim that if a woman freezes her eggs before 35, she has a 75 per cent chance of having a live birth. Despite cancers of the gall bladder, breast and pancreas, this procedure can be done. (ANI)
