New Delhi, Feb.14 (ANI): The family of deceased Arunachal student Nido Taniam met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday, and put forth ten conditions for his approval on behalf of the people of the North East.
"We met the PM along today along with a member of Lok Sabha and my wife, and we have put forth our. The PM expressed his grief and sorrow over the incident of my son's death," said Nido Pavitra, Taniam's father.
"He is very much concerned about Taniam's case and the North East people as a whole. We have demanded ten conditions from the PM. They are, immediate handover of Nido's case to the CBI, capital punishment to all the perpetrators of such heinous crimes at the earliest, stringent action against the police personnel who failed to register a case and who failed to get a medical examination following the first assault of the victim," he said.
"We have also requested for erecting a memorable statue of Nido at a suitable location in the capital, so that people are reminded of the tragedy, and for the government to declare 30th January as national anti-racism day in India," he added.
He further said that he had also requested the PM to designate one of the four courts in the capital to deal with cases of discrimination against people from the North east.
"Out of four fastrack courts, one court should be for dealing with racial decimation and atrocities against the people of the North East," said Pavitra.
"One police station should also be set aside to deal with the same and out of the 90,000 police personnel in Delhi, at least five thousand should be recruited from the North East," he said.
"The other demands are inclusion the culture and history of the North East in the syllabus, and an immediate review of the six member committee, constituted by the ministry of home affairs, and to include people representing the North East in the same," he added.
The family had also met Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday and had pressed their demand for action against Delhi police.
Taniam was allegedly beaten to death at Lajpat Nagar in south Delhi on January 29 as he got into a brawl with local shopkeepers while reacting to a verbal racial slur and taunts on his hair colour.
He was studying in Jalandhar and had travelled to Delhi for a holiday. (ANI)
