New Delhi, Jan 30 (IANS) A pig-rearing unit from Chhattisgarh and a poultry farm in Tamil Nadu run by groups of leprosy patients who have been cured were awarded this year's Sasakawa India Leprosy Foundation's (SILF) "rising to dignity" awards.
The third award went to a group of similar patients from Madhya Pradesh, which had successfully cultivated land allotted to them.
The awards were given away by the Japanese Ambassador Takeshi Yagi on the occasion of Anti-Leprosy Day Thursday, a release said here Thursday.
The awards are presented to leprosy-affected people who have successfully given up begging to start micro-enterprises with the help of SILF.
SILF was set up under the patronage of Yohei Sasakawa, Japan's goodwill ambassador for the human rights of people affected by leprosy.
Sponsored by the State Bank of India, the awards comprise a citation and a cheque of Rs.100,000.
