Delhi Police lathi charge after violent protestors break barricades

New Delhi , Tue, 21 Jan 2014 ANI

New Delhi, Jan.21, (ANI): The Delhi Police on Tuesday lathi charged the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) workers near the venue of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's dharna.

The workers apparently broke barricades installed by the police to stop Kejriwal's supporters from reaching the site of his dharna.

Afterwards, the Delhi Police lathi charged the protestors and pushed back the protestors who tried to reach the venue.

"Police has beaten us badly... many AAP workers have broken legs and hands. At least 8-10 protestors were injured," claimed an AAP volunteer.

Another AAP volunteer said, "Even infiltrators on the border are not treated as badly as the Delhi Police treated us."

Meanwhile AAP leader Sanjay Singh appealed to the protestors to maintain peace and stay at their places.

"Many people have been beaten up by the police. I will try to take them to a hospital. Till now, eight people have been injured, in which two are very serious," he said.

On allegations of the Delhi Police about protestors breaking the barricades, Singh, said, "People have witnessed the brutality of the police in the past also. But we are here to calmly protest."

The Kejriwal-led AAP protest entered its second day on Tuesday, and neither of the two major political parties-the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are in favour of its continuance.

Over 4000 police personnel have secured the protest area, and Rapid Action Force (RAF) teams are on standby duty.

Kejriwal has threatened to disrupt this year's Republic Day parade on grounds that both the BJP and the Congress, besides a section of the media, are misleading the people.

He has also accused Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde of inconveniencing India by not cooperating with the Delhi administration. He said that as chief minister he will decide where he wants to sit for his protest, and not the central government or the Delhi Police.

Meanwhile, four Metro stations - Patel Chowk, Central Secretariat, Udyog Bhavan, Race Course - have stopped operating until further notice. Massive traffic jams are expected in central Delhi.

Earlier, Kejriwal and AAP workers tried to remove the barricades at Rail Bhawan and threatened to go on an indefinite strike if his demands were not met.

"If by January 26, our demands are not met, then we will fill Rajpath with lakhs of people," Kejriwal warned. (ANI)
