EU chief gives Google 'last opportunity' to settle antitrust row

London, Thu, 16 Jan 2014 ANI

London, Jan. 16 (ANI): EU competition commissioner has reportedly given Google one 'last opportunity' to settle allegations in the long-running antitrust case that claims the search giant has been misusing its dominant position in web search.

Head of the European Commission's competition unit, Joaquin Almunia, has been pursuing an antitrust complaint against Google since 2010 and has warned the search giant of legal actions.

According to the Guardian, Almunia said if Google doesn't improve their proposal, a third one after the first two were rejected, the commission would be forced to follow the traditional route of fining the company, which could shoot up to 10 percent of its global revenues.

The complainants have accused the search giant of demoting them in search results while displaying similar services of its own prominently on its first search results page.

The report said that any restrictions placed by European regulators on Google would be valid only in the EU; a situation that complainants have claimed would make the search giant route searches via non-EU data centres to elude the restrictions. (ANI)
