The Replica of Labna's Arch was inaugurated by Sheila Dikshit, Chief Minister of Delhi at Garden of Five Senses, New Delhi. H.E Jaime Nualrat, Mexican Ambassador to India, G.G Saxena, MD and CEO, DTTDC were also present during the inauguration ceremony.
The expansive Garden of Five Senses has innumerable marvelous pieces of architecture influenced by diverse Indian cultural traditions. Labna Arch is one of them now. It becomes a symbol of tangible expression of friendship and links between Mexico and India. The Arch of Labna is one of the largest and most ornate architectural structures known to have built by the Mayans. The Inauguration of the Labna Arch was very symbolic to Mexico as it is Mexico's National Day. This is the first replica of Labna's Arch which have been reproduce in India and World.
While speaking on the occasion Chief Minister said that "This initiative by Delhi Govt. will bring both the countries together in terms of Heritage, culture and political tie ups." She also added that the "Arch of Labna is the Sixth Sense added to this Garden of Five Senses. "She further mentioned that Delhi Govt. will take step to beautify the historic arch by lighting up during the evening hours so as to make it one of the attraction for the tourists.
The arch will stand as a testimony to years of Artistic, Political and Economic Exchanges between India and Mexico. New Delhi becomes the architectural home to the heritage of two ancient civilizations.The Arch is part of a passage way connecting two plazas or courtyards, separating the living quarters of priests, soldiers and nobles.
Its facade is decorated with mouldings, pillars, and niches. Its corners display masques representing Chaac, the God of Rain. The thatched houses decorate the facade of the building.This project was conceived almost a decade ago by Mr. Julio Faesler, former Ambassador of Mexico to India and was materialized through the support of the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi, INTACH and Delhi Tourism & Transportation and Development Corporation (DTTDC).
