There is a Meerut connection to the Kenyan entry to the Tiger Paw International Sports Film Festival being held from August 27-29, 2013, in New Delhi.
The Kenyan entry is a feature length documentary ‘The Karims’:A SPORTING DYNASTY. The documentary is a biography of the Karim family of Mombasa, Kenya, who have now played cricket for Kenya for three generations, including three World Cups, climaxing with Aasif Karim’s record breaking performance in World Cup 2003 against Australia in Durban. The documentary traces the story of the Karim from the arrival of the first generation in 1928 and brings the story up-to-date to 2013 when Irfan Karim became only the sixth Kenyan to score a century in ODI’s.
The documentary is written and directed by Amit Tyagi, a Meerut born and brought up filmmaker. Till recently, Amit Tyagi was based in Nairobi, Kenya, and directed several important projects for film and television. These include the Kenyan version of WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE (the Indian version is Amitabh Bachchan’s Kaun Banega Crorepati), the feature film MUIGWITHANIA (the only feature film ever made about Indian migrants to Africa), besides winning awards from UNESCO and the Government of France.
It is noted that Amit, is the son of the late freedom fighter, trade unionist, lawyer and law professor Veereshwar Tyagi. Now he has back in Meerut and is hoping to use his international experience to tell stories about Meerut to audiences worldwide.
A Meerut native, Amit Tyagi is an alumnus of St Mary’s Academy, Meerut, St Stephen’s College, Delhi, and the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune.
After training, Amit worked in Mumbai and was associated with television programs like ‘Surabhi’ (with Siddharth Kak) and ‘Turning Point’ (presented by Girish Karnad). In addition, Amit had directed the short fiction film ‘Mera Puppy Mera Kyon Nahin Ho Sakta’ for the Children’s Film Society of India.
In 1996, Amit left to set-up a television station in Uganda and subsequently migrated to Nairobi, Kenya. Here he was involved with writing and producing over twenty-five documentaries and short fiction films, over one-hundred hours of material for television broadcast (a cookery show and a dance show amongst other things). Amit has written several feature films about the Indians living in Kenya and directed MUIGWITHANIA (Reconciliation), the only feature film about Indians living in Africa, starring Tom Alter from India along with other Kenyan actors.
