Twitter launches new translation service for people speaking non-Arabic

New Delhi, Fri, 05 Jul 2013 NI Wire

Micro blogging giant Twitter has launched a new service that will automatically translate tweets of leading figures for global understanding of Egyptian issues.

According to the BC reports, Twitter is using Microsoft Bing translator as an experiment that will cover European languages like Italian, French and Spanish, before extending it to Arabic.

BBC reports that, thenon-Egyptians were able to read the tweets of Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi in their local languages, as Egypt's military overthrew him on Wednesday.

In addition to that, Twitter has provided the list of all the Egyptian accounts that are being translated, called 'egypt2013', which has 63 members, report added.

This Twitter translation service could help journalists get unfiltered access to new sources as well as the archives.

Twitter can bring added value, over traditional news outlets, by spreading the word on events not heard of and bringing local perspectives on major news items, said Dr Miles Osborne, from the University of Edinburgh's School of Informatics.
