A Mumbai sessions court has announced its decision in the case against Salman Khan in the 2002 hit-and-run case on Wednesday. Court framed charges against Salman under sections 304 part (2), 279, 337, 338, of the IPC and section 134(a)(b) Motor Vehicles act section 66.
If found guilty under the charge, which pertains to culpable homicide not amounting to murder, Salman Khan could face 10 years in prison.
On his part, Khan pleaded not guilty and also sought exemption from appearing in person for the next hearing, which has been granted.
The Court has transferred the case to be heard by another judge.
Earlier, Salman Khan had been tried by a metropolitan magistrate under the less severe charges of rash and negligent driving, which stipulated a maximum sentence of two years in prison.
However, the metropolitan magistrate, after examining 17 witnesses in the case, had invoked the more serious charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder against the actor.
On July 19, the court had adjourned hearing the matter till July 24.
On September 28 2002, a Land Cruiser allegedly driven by Salman Khan ran over a group of footpath dwellers in Mumbai's Bandra suburb killing 1 person and injuring 4 others.
