To compete with Google Android, Microsoft Windows and Apple IOS, Firefox launched its operating system and now smartphone companies have started releasing phones based on this OS.
Spain's Telefonica launched ZTE Open smartphone and Alcatel launched One Touch Fire smartphone that are the first in the world to operate on Firefox operating system.
They goes on sale in Spain today for 69 euros (about $90) and will soon be available in several Latin American countries.
While launching the phone Telefonica's chief of product development, Carlos Domingo, said, “The device is aimed at the youth market and at people who are new to smartphones”.
Mozilla executives said the ZTE Open is the "first chapter" in what they expect to be a long project, one that is already attracting interest from many other telecommunications companies.
There phones are entry level phones designed to attract first time users or users who are looking for cheap or budget smartphones.
Talking about the Firefox operating system, the basic user interface is similar to that of Android and iPhone but different from Windows. All the applications are arranged in grid that can be scrolled left or right. At the bottom of the main screen there are four main function buttons: phone calls, text messages, browser and email.
For more apps users can visit the Firefox Marketplace.
The main problem Mozilla will face is same as Microsoft - to get developers on board. There are very few apps in Firefox Marketplace and users will get frustrated eventually with fewer applications.
