India wins Champions trophy beating England in a super-thrilling rain marred Final

New Delhi, Mon, 24 Jun 2013 NI Wire

India beat England by five runs in a dramatic rain marred 20 over final to clinch the Champions Trophy outrightly at Edgbaston on Sunday.

India, which did not loose a single match in the entire tournament, remained unbeaten to emerge as a proud and well-deserved winner of the Champions Trophy 2013, the only coveted trophy missing from India's winning list. Moreover, with this win captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni also added another milestone to his cap after making India proud by winning T-20 World cup and ODI World Cup as captain.

However, the real hero for India were Virat Kohli, the top scorer with 43 and Ravindra Jadeja, who made unbeaten 35 off 25 balls as India made 129 for seven in 20 overs. Both of them came up with a valuable contribution of 47 off 33 when India were left struggling at 66/5. Opener Shikhar Dhawan also struck a crucial 31.

While defending a moderate score as the match more looked like T-20 affair, the spinners Ravichandran Ashwin (2/15) and Jadeja (2/24) striked on time to destroy England's top-order that left them struggling at 46 for four in the ninth over.

But it was pacer Ishant Sharma (2/36), who really turned the match When England was looking good with Eoin Morgan (33) and Ravi Bopara (30) on the pitch, who made crucial 64-run stand. Sharma dismissed both of them in consecutive deliveries.

For India, Umesh Yadav provided the first breakthrough by taking the crucial wicket of Alastair Cook (2). Ashwin then struck in his consecutive overs to stop Jonathan Trott (20) and Joe Root (2).

All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was declared the man of the match and was also given the 'golden ball' for picking the most number of wickets, 12, in the tournament.
