A grand carnival by Delhi Government marked the culmination of Earth Week 2013. 5000 children from across 400 schools in the city gathered to celebrate this event at the residence of Delhi Chief Minister.
Speaking on this occasion, Dikshit stated that nature provides inspiration and teaches us how to smell, taste, listen, recreate, study, identify and express ourselves. The Nature Trail has been instilling in the various visitors a spirit of scientific enquiry, enhancing their skill of observation and most importantly creating and understanding about the green environs.
The Trail enables them to learn about different trees, birds, insects, mammals and their relationships with each other. She added that experiencing nature and learning from it, is one of the best ways of understanding the environment.
The Nature Trail is an enriching experience and if accompanied by a knowledgeable interpreter it adds immense value to the exercise. The Nature Trail was first inaugurated in 2006. The students of eco-clubs have been visiting the Nature Trail twice day a week on Tuesdays and Fridays. Smt. Dikshit described the carnival as an effort to bring awareness on conservation of the nature amongst children.
A thematic exhibition, “You can Make a Difference”, set up by WWF-India raised awareness towards the earth’s natural resources such as clean air, pure water and pristine forests and the unique wildlife therein, and encouraged steps towards green-living in the urban environment.
Earth Day is celebrated annually world-wide to create awareness and appreciation for the earth’s natural environment and the Web of Life. The event, held since 1970 as a teach-in, with various environmentally friendly activities, has spread internationally since 1990, gaining significant momentum in over 175 countries every year.
