Multiple enrolments in electoral rolls: Demands to register criminal case

Parliamentary Secretary to CM, Mukesh Sharma has exhorted the Chief Electoral Officer, Delhi to register criminal cases against the citizens having multiple enrolment in electoral rolls in Delhi or in different states. Sharma further stated that large number of persons have been exercising their franchise at different places making mockery of democracy. It is resulting in moulding mandate, hence, presenting doctored percentage of voting.

Sharma today met the CEO Vijay Dev to present a detailed memorandum covering eight points for his consideration. He urged the CEO to issue public notices in all language newspapers appealing to the citizens having multiple enrolments to voluntarily get their multiple name deleted failing which criminal prosecution Representation of People (ROP) Act and IPC should be initiated against them.

Sharma made it clear that the Congress Party has always been committed to purity of electoral rolls and would always be ready to extend its full support and cooperation to make the historic initiative of cleaning electoral rolls. While referring to duplicate enrollment in Delhi and nearby states, Sharma requested the CEO to get prepared a software to facilitate cross-checking of the registered voters in Delhi and nearby cities.

The software must contain the names and photographs of the registered voters. Sharma also emphasized the need of disposal of issued notices at the earliest. He also agreed to the fact that checking, cross-checking and disposal of notices is a huge burden on the CEO office. Keeping in view this fact, Shri Sharma requested the CEO to extend the date of disposal of such notices upto 30th April, 2013. Shri Sharma stated that CEO has agreed to this suggestion.
