New Delhi, Sat, 16 Feb 2013 NI Wire

Delhi Education Minister, Prof. Kiran Walia has stressed upon the need for revising land norms in Master Plan for Delhi 2021 for school running up to elementary level in the Capital City.

In order to avoid closure of hundreds of schools running in the neighbourhood, she has underlined the need to ensure an appropriate amendment in Master Plan for Delhi 2021 at the earliest failing which the fate of thousands of children studying in unrecognized schools would be jeoparadised since as per provisions of section 18 of RTE Act 2009, these unrecognized schools shall have to be closed down w.e.f. 1st April 2013.

Prof. Walia stated that with implementation of RTE Act, 2009, it has become necessary to review the land norms in respect of primary and elementary schools so that maximum numbers of school could be brought under the fold of recognition.

She further stated that the Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit has already taken up the matter with Union Minister for Urban Development, Kamal Nath and the Lt. Governor, Delhi, Tejendra Khanna.

The Education Minister mentioned that though norms are required to ensure minimum level of satisfactory infrastructural facilities to students to get quality education, however, considering the ground reality of Delhi it may not be possible for unrecognized schools to fulfill the land norms provided in the Master Plan for Delhi 2021.
