New York, December 3 (ANI): German beer brewers have filed a request with UNESCO to have their 16th century beer purity law honoured as a cultural treasure for humanity.

The German Brewers' Federation have announced that they want the cultural agency for the UN to add the Bavarian beer law "Reinheitsgebot" in its Intangible Cultural Heritage list, the New York Daily News reported.

According to Spiegel Online, the Bavarian beer purity law, which was established in 1516, restricts brewers to only water, barley malt, hops and yeast, and if the bid is successful then the law will be added to the world heritage list in 2016 on its 500th anniversary.

The federation has released a statement saying that the application was based on studies from two Bavarian universities.

Craft beer consultant Matt Simpson, who is the owner of the Beer Sommelier of Atlanta, has said that German styles beer is distinct from any other kind with their delicate, less complex brews. (ANI)
