Kolkata, Nov.30, (ANI): Social activist Medha Patkar on Saturday defended former Supreme Court judge A.K. Ganguly, who has been accused of sexually harassing a law intern in a hotel room in last December, and said the public should be able to distinguish between the professional and personal lives of other people.

"His judgements till now have been remarkable, and, they still stand as the best coming from the top court. If anything happens in his personal life, as it has happened with many bureaucrats, politicians, media persons and businessmen, then the public should be able to distinguish that," said Patkar.

On people losing faith on the judiciary, she said, "I hope we don't lose faith, because individual actions, or distortions don't make other contributions go down to the drain. Of course, the investigation is still on, but we should not comment now,"

The supreme court-appointed panel probing into alleged sexual harassment charges levelled by the law intern against a former apex court judge on Friday submitted its report to Chief Justice P. Sathasivam.

The report was submitted after recording the statement of former judge, Justice A K Ganguly, who is believed to have been accused by the law intern of sexual harassment.

Justice R.M.Lodha headed the three-judge committee.

Ganguly has testified before three serving Supreme Court judges who are investigating the charges.

So has the young woman lawyer who complained against him in a blog earlier this month, without naming him.

She has claimed that Justice Ganguly harassed her in a hotel room in December.

The inquiry against Justice Ganguly began just days before Tehelka founder Tarun Tejpal was accused of raping a younger female colleague. The cases have often been clubbed in a national debate on men in positions of power violating women in the workplace. (ANI)
