Beijing, Nov. 13 (ANI): China is set to crack down on agencies and websites that broker marriages between Chinese and foreigners.
The move comes after the Ministry of Public Security said a website is suspected of breaking the law for offering blind dates with Vietnamese women.
According to the China Daily, 55tuan.com offered a lottery in which winners could travel to Vietnam for a blind date.
It also promised to refund the winner's round-trip ticket if he succeeded in marrying a Vietnamese woman.
More than 20,000 men signed up for the travel promotion event.
According to the report, Chen Shiqu, director of the anti-trafficking office of the ministry's criminal investigation division, said the event, which might involve human trafficking and fraud, may be illegal.
The Ministry of Public Security will crack down on illegal profiteering in the name of foreign-marriage brokering, he said.
He said that there are clear prohibitive provisions about international matchmaking services, adding that foreign marriage agencies are banned.
The Ministry of Public Security will work with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Civil Affairs to crack down on human trafficking, he added.
Chen's remarks came after a notice issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on its website that warned Chinese citizens against matchmaking services.
The warning comes after some people recently lost money on bride-seeking trips to Vietnam offered by some websites. (ANI)
