New Delhi, Oct.31 (ANI): External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid would be participating in the Indian Ocean Region Association for Regional Cooperation (IOR-ARC) meeting in Perth, Australia from November 1 onwards.
Khurshid left for Perth yesterday night, as Australia will assume the role of IOR-ARC chair for a two-year term, taking over from India.
"We (India) were the chair of this organization for two years, and he (Khurshid), will hand over the baton to Australia who will be the chair from November 1 onwards. Indonesia will take over as the vice chair from Australia," Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin told media here today.
"This is a 20-member organization, which has countries of the Indian Ocean literal who are likely to discuss a range of issues. One of the things on the agenda is the name of this organization. Last year, there was an initiative to try and shorten the name," he added.
He further said that other issues that are likely to be discussed include cooperation with United Nations and specialized agencies, and university mobility in the Indian Ocean region universities
"And also an initiative that we lay great store on and that is university mobility in the Indian Ocean region universities," he said.
He also said that Australia is proposing a Declaration of Perth Principles, for the peaceful and sustainable use of the Indian Ocean and its resources. (ANI)
