New Delhi, Oct.26 (ANI): Expressing concern over the soaring price of onions in the state, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Saturday said the Election Commission (EC) has permitted the Delhi Government to sell onions through vans and tempos, so that people can buy it at a reasonable price.
"The price of onions has been a matter of serious concern for us. Yesterday, we met Sharad Pawar and the chief secretary wrote a letter to the Election Commission to allow us to sell onions through vans or tempos, in order to relieve the people of Delhi of high onion prices," she told media here today.
"I am very happy that the Election Commission has allowed us to sell onions through vans, tempos in Delhi. The markets, with the help of traders, had on their own started using vans, and set up shops outside the market where people could buy onions at the correct and appropriate price," she added.
Earlier on October 24, Dikshit said that black marketing of onions should be stopped, and added that a lot of onions had gone waste due to heavy and prolonged rains.
"The situation is serious, and we trying our best so that situation improves and prices stabilize. We are getting 8000 quintals from Kolhapur, Nashik, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh. I ask traders involved in black marketing of onion to stop in the interest of the people," she said.
The wholesale and retail prices of onion across the country skyrocketed once again, ranging between Rs. 80 and Rs. 90.
Onion prices have hit Rs 90 to 100 per kg in Delhi. (ANI)
